Asian longhorned beetles leave perfectly round exit holes roughly 9–11mm in diameter, typically in maples, elms, and birches. Flatheaded borers leave oval or irregular holes, while native bark beetles create small, round holes often surrounded by pitch tubes or frass.
Finding exit holes means adult insects have already emerged — the larvae responsible for the actual damage completed their feeding cycle inside the tree before exiting.
