Expert Tree Planting & Installation Services Across Connecticut

Professional tree planting is the process of selecting, siting, and installing a tree in a way that gives it the best possible chance of long-term survival. It includes species selection based on soil type, sun exposure, drainage, and available space; correct planting depth and backfill technique; proper staking when needed; and an initial care plan to support root establishment in the first critical growing season.

At Erick’s Tree Services, our certified arborists handle every step of the tree planting process from helping you choose the right species for your Connecticut property to preparing the planting site, installing the tree at the correct depth, and providing guidance on watering and aftercare. Most tree failures happen in the first two to three years after planting, almost always due to errors made at installation. Getting it right from the start is the single most important factor in a tree’s long-term survival.

Whether you are replacing a tree that was removed, adding shade and privacy to a residential yard, enhancing a commercial landscape, or restoring canopy after storm damage, Erick’s Tree Services delivers professional results that last.

WHAT WE CAN DO FOR YOU

When you choose Erick’s Tree Services for tree planting, here is what is included:

Site Assessment & Species Selection — Our arborist evaluates the planting site for soil type, drainage, sun exposure, proximity to structures and utilities, and available above- and below-ground space. Based on that assessment, we recommend tree species that are well-suited to your specific Connecticut conditions, not just visually appealing, but ecologically and practically matched to your site.

Soil Preparation — We prepare the planting site by loosening compacted soil across a wide area — not just the planting hole — to give feeder roots room to expand horizontally into the surrounding soil. Where soil quality is poor, we incorporate appropriate amendments to improve drainage, aeration, and organic matter content without creating a “bathtub” effect that traps water around the root ball.

Correct Planting Depth Installation — The single most common cause of tree failure after planting is being planted too deep. Our arborists locate the root flare, the point where the trunk transitions to the root system, and ensure it sits at or just above grade level. We never bury the root flare, regardless of how the tree was grown in its nursery container.

Staking (Where Necessary) — Not every tree needs staking, and over-staking is itself a source of long-term trunk damage. When staking is appropriate (typically for bare-root trees or large caliper trees in exposed locations) we install two-stake systems with flexible, low-tension ties that allow natural trunk movement while preventing wind-rock during root establishment.

Mulching — We apply a 3 to 4 inch layer of wood chip mulch in a wide ring around the base of every newly planted tree, extending to the dripline where practical. Mulch regulates soil temperature, retains moisture, and suppresses competing grass, three of the most important factors in successful tree establishment. We never mound mulch against the trunk (volcano mulching), which causes bark decay and root girdling.

How Does Professional Tree Planting Work in Connecticut?

Free On-Site Consultation — Our arborist visits your property, evaluates the planting site, and discusses your goals: shade, privacy, aesthetics, wildlife habitat, or replacement of a removed tree. We recommend species that fit your site, your space, and your long-term vision.

Tree Sourcing — We source trees from reputable Connecticut nurseries, selecting stock with good root structure, straight trunk development, and appropriate caliper for the planting site. We avoid trees with girdling roots, circling container roots, or buried root flares; all of which predict future failure.

Site Preparation — We dig the planting hole to the correct dimensions: as deep as the root ball and two to three times as wide. We rough up the walls of the hole to help roots penetrate the surrounding soil, and we loosen a wide area of surrounding soil where feeder roots will expand over the next several years.

Planting — We remove all container materials or synthetic burlap, position the tree so the root flare sits at or slightly above grade, and backfill with native soil in stages, tamping gently to eliminate large air pockets without over-compacting around the root ball.

Mulching & Staking — We apply a 3 to 4 inch mulch ring extending as far from the trunk as practical, keeping mulch several inches clear of the bark. Staking is installed only where genuinely needed, using flexible ties that are removed after the first full growing season.

Aftercare Instructions — We walk you through the first-year watering schedule, explain what healthy establishment looks like, and identify warning signs that the tree may be struggling. We recommend a follow-up arborist visit at 6 to 12 months to assess establishment progress.

What is the best time of year to plant trees in Connecticut?

Early fall (September through October) and early spring (March through April) are the two best planting windows in Connecticut. Fall planting is generally preferred cooler temperatures reduce transplant stress, roots continue to establish through the fall before the ground freezes, and the tree wakes up the following spring with a head start. Spring planting works well too but requires closer attention to watering as temperatures rise quickly.

How deep should a tree be planted in Connecticut?

A tree should be planted so that the root flare (the visible widening at the base of the trunk where it transitions to the root system) sits at or just above the soil surface. Planting too deep is the single most common cause of tree failure in Connecticut. Even 2 to 3 inches too deep can restrict oxygen to the root zone and cause slow decline over several years. Our arborists always locate and correctly position the root flare before planting.

What trees grow best in Connecticut soil?

Connecticut soils vary significantly from the sandy, well-drained soils of the coast to the heavy clay soils of river valleys and the rocky, shallow soils of the upland regions. Native species consistently outperform non-natives in Connecticut conditions: Red Maple, Swamp White Oak, Serviceberry, Tulip Tree, Eastern White Pine, and Dogwood are among the most reliable choices. Our arborists assess your specific site before recommending any species.

Do I need a permit to plant a tree in Connecticut?

Most residential tree planting in Connecticut does not require a permit. However, some municipalities have specific regulations about planting within utility easements, rights-of-way, or near property lines. Commercial planting associated with development projects may require landscape plan approval. Our arborists are familiar with local requirements across the communities we serve and will flag any regulatory considerations during the site assessment.

How long does it take for a newly planted tree to establish in Connecticut?

Most trees planted in Connecticut require one to three years to fully establish, meaning the root system has expanded sufficiently into the surrounding soil to support the tree through drought, heat, and seasonal stress without supplemental irrigation. Smaller trees establish faster; large caliper trees may take three to five years. Correct planting technique, consistent first-year watering, and proper mulching dramatically reduce establishment time.

Do you guarantee the trees you plant?

We guarantee our workmanship, meaning the planting was performed correctly per ISA standards. Tree survival after planting depends significantly on aftercare, particularly watering during the establishment period, which is the homeowner’s responsibility. We provide specific aftercare instructions with every planting and are happy to answer questions during the establishment period. Contact us if your newly planted tree shows signs of stress within the first season.
